In 1973, Blumer and Katz became developed 'The uses and gratification theory' arguing audiences consume media text for one or more of the four reasons:

  • Information
  • Entertainment
  • Socialisation (replacing human relationships)
  • Surveillance

News = facts/information BUT because the 'news' you see on the TV, online in newspapers is also a 'product' that has to sell a target audience, it can also be entertaining and this may distract the facts.

Fake news:
False, often sensational, information disseminated under the guise of news reporting.

One example of a fake news story was an elderly woman being accused of training her 65 cats to steal from her neighbours.

Another example of fake news was when President Donald Trump ordered the execution of five turkeys pardoned by Obama.

Another example of a fake news story was that a man was sexually harassed by a sasquatch.
