L/O: to explore the intertextuality of the lego movie.

Emmet, an ordinary lego figurine who always follows the rules, is mistakenly identified as the Special -- an extraordinary being and the key to saving the world. He finds himself drafted into a fellowship of strangers who are on a mission to stop an evil tyrant's plans to conquer the world. Unfortunately for Emmet, he is hopelessly -- and hilariously -- unprepared for such a task, but he'll give it his all anyway.

Main message: believe in yourself

Warner bros characters:

L/O: to explore the intertextuality of the lego movie.

Postmodernism

  • challenges genre conventions: might be a mixture of many genres; challenge typical character roles etc.
  • Pastiche: imitates other texts, humorous take on society/culture
  • Hyper-reality: makes the audience aware that they are watching a movie
The Lego Movie is a postmodernism film as it contains pastiche where they have overpriced coffee mick-taking starbucks. It also imitates 'The Matrix."

L/O: to identify the target audience using demographics and psychographics.

The movie targets a family audience.

That could be split into the following 3 groups:

  • young kids who play with lego
this may appeal to them because they like playing with lego
  • parents who played it when they were young too
the storyline of the matrix and references to Harry Potter
  • young adult cinema-goers
this may appeal to this group of people as the voices behind the characters e.g. Chris Pratt

Will Arnett - Batman

Chris Pratt - Emmet

Will Ferrell - President

Channing Tatum - Superman

L/O: To explore the intertextuality of the lego movie

Similarities:

Location: There are 2 worlds in the lego movie and the matrix and also only one of them is real in them."The Matrix" is the simulated world and the lego world is also the simulated world.

Characters: There is a 'special' hero who can make happen whatever he wants to happen, a girl who likes the hero, and the old wise man that knows all the answers. Neo and Emmet are also the chosen heroes and don't believe it at the beginning but believe it towards the end of the film.

Themes/messages: Both of the heroes "die" at the end and they also get with the girl that has liked them through the whole movie.

Narrative: When Neo and Emmet are chosen, they don't believe that they are but as it gets towards the end of the film they start to believe in themselves.

Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the intertextual relationship between the matrix and the lego movie.

Advantages:

  • People that used to use lego will understand the storyline as the matrix is 20 years old
  • young adults may be able to understand the messages
  • younger children are more likely to understand the cartoon story line
Disadvantages:

  • Younger people don't understand the storyline
  • adults might not understand the references
I think overall it is an advantage because there are more advantages than disadvantages and it would mainly be older people that would understand the references between the matrix and the lego movie and the younger people wouldn't need to know.

1) what are the building blocks of success?
a common theme is that a brand will useful or entertaining content targeted at consumers that will soon be in a position to pay for the company's service/project; the actual content itself can be almost anything but it should stay within the spirit of the brands image, even if it's not strictly related.

2)What did lego do right?
the company brought in Phil Lord and Christopher Miller to create a funny and clever movie.

3)How has it laid foundations for future success?
When children grow up they will feel nostalgic about the film because when they grow up they would have watched the film.

1)How has it got heart?
it's got an emotive storyline that explores the meaning of love, partnership and humanity.

2)How is it all about 'you'?
the core theme of the movie: the difference between those who create and those who build, the difference between those who lead and who follow, and the difference between those who choose to be themselves or a part of something bigger.

3)How does it show that it knows its audience?
it shows that it knows its audience by offering 'something for everyone' with a healthy dose of slapstick for the kids, cultural savvy for the teens and something scatty yet hilarious social commentary for the adults.
